ESL teacher wanted in Metepec, Mexico

Pangea Idiomas Mexico Published: December 18, 2015

   Metepec, Mexico
   Full-time

Description

We give classes both at the school's facilities and in the client's facilities. Most students take 3 hours per week so the classes could be three 1 hour classes, two 1.5 hour classes or one 3 hour class depending on their availability (the majority prefer two 1.5 hour classes). Most of the classes are individual but at the school the maximum number of students is 4 per class so the groups are very small. In some of the companies that we work in the groups are larger and could have from 5 to 12 students.

We have a wide range of students including executives, assistants, factory workers, housewives, university students, young children and teenagers. The teaching style we prefer is based on a communicative approach. The whole idea is to get the student communicating in English and to ensure that they can understand when speaking with a native speaker. Grammar and vocabulary exercises are important but not the main focus.

The school opens from 7 to 9.30pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday we work from 8am to 3pm. Saturday is normally our busiest day as that's when most of our students have free time. Working hours vary between these hours and could include classes both at the school and in companies. The average number of teaching hours per week is 20-25 but we have more hours available for those who wish to work more.

The job would be working a split shift schedule of early morning and evening classes. Normally there aren't so many classes during the day because most of the students work or go to school. The schedule would not be the same every day. Some days you'd work less than others - it all depends on the days the students prefer to come.

The hourly wage starts at $95 pesos an hour for classes at the school and $110 pesos an hour for classes at companies. Payment is made every fortnight. This is the starting wage and if all goes we can discuss the possibility of a small increase within a few months.

In general, Pangea is a very relaxed school; our main focus is the student and getting them to learn in the way that best suits them.

Accommodation

We rent a house for teachers which is within walking distance of the school, about 5 to 10 minutes away. If you'd like to stay there you would be sharing with 3 other teachers. Those that stay there have to pay a share of the rent and utilities like gas and power - the school pays the majority of the rent but teachers pay $1350 pesos each per month to cover their share of the rent and water payments.

Drinking water costs are not included - a 20 liter bottle costs $30 - $40 pesos. The cost of gas and power is shared between the teachers living in the house. Power is generally pretty cheap, maybe $100 - $150 pesos per person per month and gas is about the same. If you prefer to live alone we can help you find a studio apartment to rent, prices start from around $2800 pesos per month.

Spanish lessons

All of our foreign teachers have the opportunity to receive free Spanish classes if they wish or if they need them. We also offer discounted rates for those who wish to learn languages such as French, Portuguese or German.

We are looking for someone to start in January or February next year. If you would be interested, I would love to hear from you.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and/or TESOL Certificate. Experience is preferred but not essential.

Materials needed to Apply

Please send a cover letter and a CV. A photo would be appreciated but is not essential.
