Job Description and Position:

Title: English Program Coordinator

Dates of position: (**please make a note the following key dates in the recruitment process**)

Application Deadline: Sunday August 16, 2015

First Interview: Wednesday August 19, 2015

Second Interview: Friday August 21, 2015

Start Date: mid September 2015

Contract Duration: September 2015-December 16, 2016


Living Stipend of $550 per month provided.

WOO Gigante English Program Background:

WOO has supported volunteers to deliver ad hoc English classes to students in the Jose Dolores Riviera Primary School for four years. With the support of Lynn and Betty Magnum and of Padre Fabretto, WOO was able to hire a full time English teacher in June 2014 to work in both the primary school and the community. In this period the English program has:

  • Worked within the primary school (grades K-6) 2 days per week delivering English classes
  • Worked with the local teachers during a class 1 day a week to support English within the classroom
  • Developed a working curriculum for use in the primary school
  • Delivered adult and youth club classes within the community
  • Developed and delivered a Surf English Summer Camp during January holidays
  • Worked with WOO volunteer groups to coordinate their input into the Gigante English Program
  • Developed strong relationships and support with the community of Gigante and partner organizations


We are looking for an experienced, qualified and enthusiastic individual to continue and to develop further this work in this community.


Direct Supervisor: WOO Program Director (Lisa Bisceglia)

In-direct Supervisor: WOO Executive Director, Nicaragua (Bo Fox)

Work Scope and Responsibilities:

The following responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • 10-12 hours a week of formal English instruction for grades preschool-6th at the primary school
  • 6-10 hours a week of English instruction open to the community of Gigante
  • Design and execution of WOO Summer Camp for 4 weeks in January
  • 8-10 hours a week- Programmatic support with collaborative volunteer programs of both Project WOO and Padre Fabretto (Including but not limited to the design and execution of English initiatives within the community and school that provide opportunity for short term volunteers to participate in teaching English)
  • Principal Duties:
  • Head English teacher at Primary School, Jose Dolores Rivera
    • Teach daily English lessons to students, teachers and the greater Gigante community
    • Work collaboratively in communication and coordination with local teachers, parents, youth, community leaders, Project WOO and Fabretto staff
    • Design and implementation of adult English classes, while creating additional opportunities for the greater community to participate in ongoing adult English
    • Design, implementation and facilitation of newly revised English curriculum
    • Proper assessment of student learning
    • Deliver Monthly and Annual progress reports



The English Program Coordinator has the right to take up to three weeks of paid leave off work, as approved by both supervisors with at least one-week notice.

Note: Time off has to be planned appropriately per MINED school schedule.


The candidate will work alongside the current English Program Coordinator for a formal training period of 1½ months.

The candidate will also be expected to spend at least 3 months in a homestay, living with a local family. This helps to develop bonds within the community as well as an understanding of issues that affect the local population of Gigante.


Skill Area Teaching ESL
  • (Essential) Experience teaching English as a Second Language within a classroom setting
  • (Desired) Experience teaching English to a variety of ages within school and community settings
  • (Essential) Experience developing lesson plans and delivering a set curriculum
  • (Desired) Experience developing and adapting a curriculum for specific groups
  Community Development
  • (Essential) Experience engaging individuals and groups into programs using a range of methods
  • (Desired) Experience developing strong relationships with a range of community members and engaging "hard to reach" groups in community projects
  Community Development
  • (Essential) Knowledge of Nicaragua and the issues that affect communities here
  • (Desired) Experience working, volunteering, or traveling in rural communities in Central or Latin America
  Language Skills
  • (Essential) High level of written and oral Spanish language skills
  • (Desired) Experience working in a Spanish and English environment
  Group Work Skills
  • (Desired) Experience working with and supporting young adult volunteer groups in a rural developing community
  • (Essential) An open mind and passion for community development work
  • (Essential) Flexible and adaptable to a range of settings and work environments
  • (Essential) Friendly, team player and open to new experiences
  • (Desired) Experience working in small development/NGO organizations
  • (Desired) Surfer or willing to learn
