We are a private language school that caters to kids, 2-15. We sing and dance with the wee ones, but we are serious about teaching them a linguistic phonics program that will aid them in our reading program, beginning from age 6. There are two teachers, and one of them is me. We must work as a team to support students not only academically but emotionally, as many children have learning differences, uneven development, special needs, etc. We create a lot of original materials using graphics software to make our lessons great.
The class size is usually from 3-6. We have a maximum of six hours of lessons per day. Work is Mon-Fri 1:00-9:00. Classes usually start at 4pm, so the afternoon hours are spent preparing for the lessons. Our town is small (55,000 people), but it is on a shinkansen train line, so access to larger cities is available. However, we are remote enough that teachers who need to meet up to socialize with other native English speakers have to do that on the weekends, so a candidate who needs a more active social life might not adapt well. However, if you like the beach, there is a beautiful one just down the street.
This is an entry level position, but in our experience teachers who also have some Japanese skills and a personal interest in Japan/Japanese culture will adapt to the job and rural life better. Some experience working with children is also helpful. The teacher must be comfortable singing and dancing with kids. We make a lot of original materials using graphics software, so experience working with vector graphics like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator is a plus. Art and music experience is not critical, but very welcome.
Obviously, strong English grammar understanding is important. We need people who can speak NATIVE English without a strong dialect because we teach linguistic phonics, which requires training in sound discrimination and pronunciation. We also value strong organizational skills. But, most importantly, we need someone who is flexible, adaptable, and good at working with other people.
